In August 2017, Warner Bros. announced that a film centered around the origin of the Joker, with a plot that takes place ambiguously late-20th Century Gotham City is currently in development. Todd Phillips will direct the film, as well as co-write with Scott Silver, and co-produce with Martin Scorsese. The film will reportedly feature a younger actor portraying the character and will be separate from the DC Extended Universe and be part of a new film label by DC Comics and Warner Bros.[1] In an interview with HeyUGuys, Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy expressed hope that Joker voice actor Mark Hamill could reprise the role in the film.[2] On September 1 2017, THR reported that Leonardo DiCaprio is wanted by Warner Bros. for the role of the Joker, although no formal offer has been made. THR also reported that DC Extended Universe Joker actor Jared Leto wanted to reprise the role in the film.[3] In June 2018, Variety reported that a Joker standalone film with Leto reprising his role is in development.[4]
