Biography[]

Watchmen[]

The Comedian (real name; Edward Blake) was a member of the original Minutemen. Throughout the decades Edward Blake committed several crimes, because he thought that humans were savages and should be treated like a joke.

In 1940, Blake attempted to rape Silk Spectre while she was getting dressed. she refused his sexual advances, he persisted and she punched him in the face. Being enraged, Blake punched her in the stomach and face until blood was spilling from her mouth and laid her on the ground barely able to move. Hooded Justice interrupted the assault in time and caught Blake with his pants down.

Years later, Blake had a sexual encounter with Sally Jupiter, a consensual one in this instance. One year later she had a child that would be later revealed to be Laurie. All this occurred while Sally was still married, despite that Sally apparently had feelings for the Blake.

Blake played a major role in the United States' war with Vietnam, notoriously teaming up with Doctor Manhattan. Shortly after Manhattan's powers forced the North Vietnamese into full surrender, Blake was confronted by a Vietnamese woman he had apparently had unprotected sex with. He told her bluntly that he planned to leave the country immediately without her, and in a rage, she slashed his face with a broken bottle. Blake then shot and killed her. Manhattan did not stop him from pulling the trigger, Blake then claimed that Manhattan did not care about humans anymore.

A few years later, the current Watchmen had a team meeting. During said meeting, Blake claimed what Ozymandias was presenting was all hogwash. After the meeting was over, Blake attempted to speak with Laurie, however Sally arrived and told her to come with her. Blake asked Sally what was wrong with a guy speaking to his "old friend's daughter".

During the Police Strike of 1977, Blake along with Nite Owl attempted to speak to protestors. In this case the mob responded angrily rejecting costumed heroes and vigilantes being on the streets instead of police. Blake eventually responded with violence, beating and shooting civilians in cold blood. Dan attempted to stop Blake, but he rejected his plea. Blake stated that heroes and vigilantes are society's only true protection "from themselves". Dan asked Blake about the 'American Dream', to which he responded that it came true.

He eventually found out that Ozymandias was planning to kill around 15 million people to save billions. Now being in panic, he went to see his old foe, Moloch, telling him that he was the closest friend the had. When Ozymandias discovered this, he disguised himself as a burglar and broke into his apartment, he fought him off despite his old age. Ozymandias easily outmatched him and he murdered Blake by tossing him out a window. The other masked heroes investigated the his death and they found out that Ozymandias was the one who murdered the him, because of the fact that he found out about his plan.

Under the Hood[]

Blake appears briefly in the documentary, declining to comment or even be on camera.

Character traits[]

Despite being one of the first and founding heroes, Blake was a violent and sadistic sociopath who was mainly interested in heroism as an excuse and means to hurt criminals. Later, Blake worked for the corrupt government and did even more reprehensible things as a soldier in the Vietnam War. He displayed little to no remorse even as he crossed lines even the more ruthless heroes of his universe wouldn't consider doing.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Thomas Jane, Mel Gibson, Johnny Depp, Nathan Fillion, Gary Busey, Ron Perlman and Tommy Lee Jones were all considered for the role of Edward Blake before Jeffrey Dean Morgan was cast.
  • Director Zack Snyder found casting for The Comedian to be a difficult process, as the character is gruff and grizzled. Most of the actors he met with he felt were too groomed. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was very grumpy during his meeting with Snyder, something that appealed to him a great deal.
