The Grappling gun is a grappling hook-like gun that Batman and Batgirl utilize. It is used for climbing to or descending from higher areas in seconds, as well as swinging among structures or in some cases, to incapacitate opponents, either by ensnaring or lassoing them.

Later, Batman built more advanced suits that had grapple wire launchers in the gloves of his suits. Dick Grayson was never known to use one and also had grapple launchers built into his second suit.

Designs[]

Batman[]

Originally, the base gadget was multi-purpose spring-action reel handle that fired different attachments. It was first used in the chemical factory to yank a thug off a catwalk. Later, different attachments were used to rescue Vicki Vale.

Batman Returns[]

The original reel was used once more to rescue Selina Kyle from the circus gang.

Batman Forever[]

Eventually, the gadget was reduced to being a single purpose grapple gun. It was used to save a bank security guard.

Batman & Robin[]

Batman briefly used a special ice armor grapple gun inside the observatory, though he primarily used new wrist mounted grappling hook launchers during this era. Barbara Wilson used a grapple gun to save Dick Grayson when his wrist mounted line failed.

Appearances[]

Behind the scenes[]

The design for grappling hook launcher changed in every movie so that different toys could be made. Even the one in Batman Returns is subtly different, with a chrome plate in the handle being the most noticeable difference.

Trivia[]

  • In the 1989 Batman film, the Grappling Hook attachment could be removed from the Spring-Action Reel. At the the finale a Bola-Launcher is attached to the device, tethering Joker's leg to a gargoyle so as to prevent his escape.
  • In the comics, Batman once utilized a miniaturized, pistol like harpoon gun called the "Bat-Poon", which is used similarly to how the grapple devices have been weaponized in the movies. However, the Bat-Poon did not have motorized reel so Batman still had slowly climb up the rope after launching the grappling hook and it was rarely used.
