Abin Sur was a member of the Green Lantern Corps from the planet Ungara. He was the Green Lantern of sector 2814 and the predecessor of Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

Biography[]

Green Lantern[]

Years ago, Abin Sur defeated the fear-essence being Parallax and imprisoned him in the Lost Sector (Sector 666) on the ruined planet Ryut. However, in the present day, Parallax escaped from his prison. Six months later, after killing four Green Lanterns and destroying two planets, Parallax attacked Sector 2814 and mortally wounded Abin Sur, who escaped and crash-landed on the nearest inhabited planet - Earth. The dying Abin Sur commanded his ring to find a worthy successor on the planet.

Ferris Aircraft test pilot Hal Jordan was chosen by the ring and transported to the crash site, where Abin Sur appointed him a Green Lantern before passing away. Hal buried his body before being picked up by Thomas Kalmaku. Sur's body was later found by the government and examined by Hector Hammond. Some of Parallax's DNA in Sur's wound got transferred to Hammond.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters[]

Abin Sur's son, Amon Sur, held a proper funeral for Abin after Parallax was defeated.

Appearances/Actors[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It took 4-5 hours to apply the prosthetic make-up to turn Temuera Morrison into Abin Sur.
  • A mannequin of Abin Sur was constructed for his autopsy.

Trivia[]

  • The design of Abin Sur's Green Lantern suit in this movie was incorporated into the DC comic 'Flashpoint'.
  • Temuera Morrison would later play Thomas Curry in Aquaman.
  • Abin Sur's ring is seen to bear the Green Lantern symbol on the outside as a crest. In the comics, this kind of ring represents a member of the Green Lantern Honor Guard (normal GL rings have the symbol inside the ring's crest).
  • The comics differ over what caused Abin Sur's mortal crash-landing on Earth. The original story says his ship was rendered inoperative by yellow radiation that surrounded the Earth; later comics mention his ship was damaged from a battle with a Red Lantern. The film combines both versions (battle with a being of yellow radiation).
